Nordic Program

The Sugar Bowl Academy Nordic Ski Team is a race-oriented program focusing on bringing Cross Country ski racers to their highest potential. The team is structured around training for and excelling at USSA Junior National competition, CNISSF High School racing, and International level junior competitions.

Head Coach Martin Benes has had a variety of coaching experience, including significant time within Far West Nordic. He has coached at the Elite level, at Bates and Dartmouth Colleges, and at the Junior level. He spent two years as the assistant coach at Sugar Bowl Academy before taking over the program. The coaching staff also includes Caitlin Curran, Jeff Schloss, and Ambrose Tuscano.

The SBA Nordic team is built on the idea that training needs to be individualized for each athlete.  One important aspect of this is maintaining a high coach to athlete ratio.  Race schedules, training plans, and equipment selection, are all based on what is the best for each individual athlete. Goal setting and personal responsibility are integrated into the team philosophy and everyone works together to help each individual reach their personal goals and potential.

The SBA Nordic team believes in a commitment to quality training. The team trains together six days a week and often joins with local Auburn Ski Club and Far West Nordic senior teams for joint workouts.  Fall training is highly specific with an emphasis on rollerskiing and winter training is on snow six days per week.  The team travels to West Yellowstone, Montana during the Thanksgiving week for early season on-snow training and to start the race season. Racing continues throughout the winter with a focus on Junior Olympic qualifying races, exposure to racing with the top juniors from outside the Division, and complete participation in the local CNISSF school race league. SBA’s Nordic Training Facilities Include:

  • The Sugar Bowl Academy Athletic facility that includes a gym, coach’s office and conference/video area, wax and locker room, and athletic trainer.
  • 4 wheel drive SBA vehicles to travel to training and races.
  • Season passes to Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Area and Auburn Ski Club training center.
  • Access to training at Tahoe Donner, Northstar, and Tahoe Cross Country XC centers.
