Squaw Mountain Run 2014

squawmtrun2014_donovan-gruberThe 2014 edition of the Squaw Mountain Run results are online. Auburn Ski Club is the driving force (and main beneficiary) of this event, and over 400 runners and hikers participated this year in perfect weather conditions on a beautiful day. And of course, Far West Nordic was there in force.

Even though it’s a running race, it’s notable that so many of the top finishers are connected to the Nordic world. Men’s winner JP Donovan is currently the XC ski coach for Incline High School, while second place Andrew Cobourn is a former top junior Nordic racer for the division. 8 out of the top 12 men’s finishers have Far West Nordic ties, and 7 out of the top 12 women, including overall winner Anja Gruber (Far West Elite Team).

Congratulations to all the participants. Results are HERE.

The “Devo” and “Comp” programs comprise of a super FUN summer full of multiple activities for athletes ages 11-19. Both levels have a strong focus on preparation for a great season of cross country skiing and racing. The head coach will lead athletes in activities that combine roller skiing, hiking, running, bounding, strength conditioning, agility and other fun activities such as mountain biking, laser biathlon, soccer, and Frisbee. TCCSEA has created a program that combines activities and allows younger as well as more mature athletes to develop skills that are advantageous for higher level athletic endeavors such as Nordic Skiing, Downhill Skiing, XC Running, Mt Biking, and more. Participants should be motivated to improve fitness and technique while having fun. The hope is to help develop fast skiers for the upcoming ski season and create lifelong patterns of health and fitness through the sport of cross country skiing.

Summer Housing Board for Collegiate Athletes

FW_NordicNews2013-webThis upcoming summer, we will once again be providing collegiate student-athletes the opportunity to come to Truckee and train as part of structured group. The program will benefit both the student-athletes, as they take advantage of the numerous training options in the area, as well as the local Nordic community. Exposure to these high level athletes will benefit the local juniors by providing them with exceptional role models. The collegiate student-athletes will help raise the level of training for our junior skiers as well.

As part of this program, we are aiming to provide housing for these student-athletes.

In a departure from previous years, we are asking Far West community members to utilize a Housing Forum through the Far West website. Those interested can post their rooms/homes so that athletes coming this summer can coordinate directly. Rent is fine, but please keep in mind these are college students, for whom money is tight.

They are all highly motivated athletes as well as exceptional students. Over the summer, they will be involved in near daily training sessions lead by Far West and Sugar Bowl Academy coach Martin Benes, along with help from the rest of the Far West coaching staff. They will all be seeking employment in the area so that they may cover their various expenses. Please contact Coach Martin if you have any questions.
