Here’s the final standing for the 2014 Sierra Ski Chase with an adjustment for low racer numbers due to the lack of snow this winter. None of the 12 races in the Chase this year met the criteria for scoring with placing points + age handicap which is 40 or more adult (senior + master) racers. However, we did have 4 races with 38 or 39 adult racers. We decided to include these races for full scoring to allow for recognition of top race finishers, rewarding participation and perseverance as well as race performance and handicapping results based on age. I hope this is a satisfactory solution to our low numbers this year. Hopefully, we’ll have better snow and more racers next year!
We will have some swag prizes to distribute to SSC & Masters Challenge winners at the Far West end-of-season awards and party to be held on Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 1-4 pm at the Tahoe Park Beach on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. Hope to see you there!
Please let me know if you have any comments or questions.

Congratulations to everyone who participated this year!
The end-of-season awards and party will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 1-4 pm at the Tahoe Park Beach on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe.
There are BBQs available. This is a potluck, and you should bring your own utensils, plates and a cup. Far West will provide water and lemonade. If you want something stronger, you should BYOB.
This party is open to Far West Nordic juniors and their families, elite team, masters, and members. Spread the word.
Congrats to everyone in this year’s masters challenge. Because of the lack of races, we decided to drop the minimum number of races down to 3 for this year. In an effort to keep things fair to the truly motivated racers out there who were able to get in 4 races, the final results within age groups will still be based on you 4 race total.
Please review your results and let me know asap if you find any scoring issues.
Hope everyone has a wonderful summer and we’ll see you back out on the snow next year.
Our own Alex “Filly” Hamilton was just named the 2014 recipient of the Milton L. Lihdholm Scholar Athlete Award at Bates College!
“This honor, presented to the outstanding female and male scholar athletes in the senior class, is one of the College’s most prestigious.”
The award is chosen on the basis of a combination of high academic achievement and consistent athletic performance.
This is the first time in the Bates’ coach’s memory that a Nordic skier has been awarded this honor.

This upcoming summer, we will once again be providing collegiate student-athletes the opportunity to come to Truckee and train as part of structured group. The program will benefit both the student-athletes, as they take advantage of the numerous training options in the area, as well as the local Nordic community. Exposure to these high level athletes will benefit the local juniors by providing them with exceptional role models. The collegiate student-athletes will help raise the level of training for our junior skiers as well.
As part of this program, we are aiming to provide housing for these student-athletes.
In a departure from previous years, we are asking Far West community members to utilize a Housing Forum through the Far West website. Those interested can post their rooms/homes so that athletes coming this summer can coordinate directly. Rent is fine, but please keep in mind these are college students, for whom money is tight.
They are all highly motivated athletes as well as exceptional students. Over the summer, they will be involved in near daily training sessions lead by Far West and Sugar Bowl Academy coach Martin Benes, along with help from the rest of the Far West coaching staff. They will all be seeking employment in the area so that they may cover their various expenses. Please contact Coach Martin if you have any questions.
We have been invited to partake in applying for a grant for the Lake Tahoe Ironman 2014 once again which will directly benefit both Far West and our athletes. The Lake Tahoe Ironman 2014 will be held on Sunday, September 21st, 2014. The fundraiser is going to be handled a bit differently this year than last, so please read all the details carefully and sign up yourself, your family and lots of others to help us fill all our spots and make this a successful fundraiser.
