FISCHER CUP SERIES
Far West Nordic announces the final results in the 2012 FISCHER CUP Race Series for the Far West Nordic Division. The Fischer Cup is the premier cross country race series in the West, pitting the best overall skiers against each other in a collection of the top Nordic races in California. In spite of the dearth of snow, causing the cancellation of three of the seven Fischer Cup races and the re-scheduling of two of them, the 2012 Cup was a tightly-contested series right down to the final event, the Tahoe Rim Tour on April 7, 2012.
Elias Bucher of Reno was the overall Men's winner this year, while Nancy Fiddler of Crowley Lake was the Women's champion. Bucher is a former University of Nevada, Reno racer, and raced this year for the UNR Winter Sports Club, and is a member of the Far West Nordic Farm Team. In the first 3 races, Bucher dominated the field, winning every event, so was assured of his overall Fischer Cup win going into the final race on Saturday. Fiddler, a former U.S. Ski Team Olympic athlete and multi-time National Champion, currently coaches for Far West Nordic, Auburn Ski Club, and the Truckee High School teams.
Second place for the men went to Gustavo Johnson of Reno, also a member of the Far West Farm Team, while the third place winner was Far West Nordic Junior and Truckee racer Jordan Mcelroy. Mcelroy, while technically tied with Sacramento's Tav Streit in points, was announced the third place winner due to Streit's lack of a current Far West Nordic racing license, a requirement for final eligibility for the Fischer Cup.
Second place in the women's division was another Far West Farm Teamer, Kara Lapoint of Truckee, just a single point behind, while Far West Nordic Junior Laurel Fiddler from the Sugar Bowl Academy completed a mother-daughter podium by taking the 3rd place slot, another single point behind.
Other races in the 2012 Cup series included Paco's Valentine Race at Tahoe Donner XC on February 12, the President's Cup Race at Auburn Ski Club on February 20, and the Snowshoe Thompson Classic at Auburn Ski Club on March 18th.
The winner of the Fischer Cup receives a $300 check, the 2nd place finisher a pair of Lowa Footwear, and 3rd place wins a JanSport Ski Pack, all sponsored by local sales representive Dan Hill of Fischer, Swix, Lowa and JanSport. Many thanks to Dan for his continued support of this competitive race series.
