In case you missed seeing it on our Race Calendar page, the 2015 Billy Dutton Uphill has been canceled due to lack of snow. Because of the uncertainty of whether Squaw Valley would even be open this late in the season, Squaw Valley USA needed to unfortunately cancel the race. We’re hoping for a rip-roaring 2016 season!
Even though we’re all still waiting for some more white stuff in the Sierra Nevada, Far West Nordic Racing has been going strong! The Tannenbaum, the Snowshoe Thompson, Paco’s Freestyle, Lakes Basin, the Skogsloppet, and all the CNISSF races (thanks to Auburn Ski Club) have all been successful. But change is in the air:
MAMMOTH BIATHLON CANCELED:
A number of factors, including the current low snow levels at the Biathlon site, has prompted ESNSA to cancel this year’s event.
ALPENGLOW FREESTYLE IS CANCELED:
Due to the dearth of snow in the Tahoe Basin, the Alpenglow Race at Tahoe Cross Country, slated for January 25, has been canceled.
SIERRA SKOGSLOPPET MOVED TO AUBURN SKI CLUB
Because of low snow, January 19th’s Skøgsloppet Race will be held at Auburn Ski Club. A important benefit for the Truckee Schools’ Nordic Ski Teams, this is traditionally a very fun race for masters and juniors alike. It’s also a JNQ for the kids, plus a Fischer Cup and Masters Challenge race.
CNISSF TRUCKEE SPRINTS ALSO AT ASC
In addition to the Skogs, the 3rd CNISSF race of the season on January 23rd has been moved to Auburn Ski Club. Ostensibly down at Truckee High’s Surprise Stadium, ASC has often hosted this race and will once again.
Come out and race!
Here’s the final standing for the 2014 Sierra Ski Chase with an adjustment for low racer numbers due to the lack of snow this winter. None of the 12 races in the Chase this year met the criteria for scoring with placing points + age handicap which is 40 or more adult (senior + master) racers. However, we did have 4 races with 38 or 39 adult racers. We decided to include these races for full scoring to allow for recognition of top race finishers, rewarding participation and perseverance as well as race performance and handicapping results based on age. I hope this is a satisfactory solution to our low numbers this year. Hopefully, we’ll have better snow and more racers next year!
We will have some swag prizes to distribute to SSC & Masters Challenge winners at the Far West end-of-season awards and party to be held on Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 1-4 pm at the Tahoe Park Beach on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. Hope to see you there!
Please let me know if you have any comments or questions.
Congratulations to Sierra Ski Chase winners Mischel Twining and Peter Hanson
