Far West Nordic recently announced the hiring of Roger Chaney as the Team’s first official manager. Roger is no stranger to Far West, having grown up in the North Tahoe area and skied for the program as a teenager, and for Montana State University during his college years. He has been involved in the Nordic industry for years, as a Technical Representative for Rossignol skis, and currently as sales representative and Technical Team member for Toko. He has also supported a regional group of Masters skiers, the Truckee XC team. Roger is a familiar face to many racers at local competitions, serving the public with wax assistance, tuning, and more. Far West is excited to support him in his new role as Elite Team Manager. You can reach Roger at firstname.lastname@example.org. Four separate Far West Nordic cross country ski teams came together for one last day of training and fun on August 23 for a run and rollerski session on the trails of Tahoe Cross Country and beyond. Tahoe XC, Auburn Ski Club, Sugar Bowl Academy, and half the Far West Elite Team participated by running from Tahoe XC to the Fibreboard Freeway, rollerskiing the Great Ski Race course to Soup Station #1, and then running to Watson Lake. The festivities didn’t end there, as Kevin Murnane and parents hosted a fun, season-ending barbecue for all. For some assorted photos from the day, check out the photos from the RUN & ROLL EXTRAVAGANZA.
August 25, 2014 @ 6 pm
Just 200 days until March 8 and the start of the 2015 XC Jr. Nationals!
Anyone with interest in helping organize this exciting event (or just learn more) is encouraged to attend the next organizing committee meeting Monday, August 25th, 6pm at the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation, 11071 Donner Pass Rd, Truckee (across from Start Haus, parking is behind the building).
The Committee is looking for a few more key volunteers to lead sub-committees and support these athletes dreams.
Check out the 2015 Junior Nationals website for more details on the event.
In the middle of August, Far West Nordic will have completed all of it’s Summer Camps and Trips for 2014. It’s been an incredibly successful year for our Junior athletes. We began with the ever-popular LAKE TAHOE BLISS CAMP in late June, where we had 22 young Nordic skiers hiking, running, kayaking, swimming, beach skiing, and rollerskiing. Also in June was the USSA Western Regional Elite Group camp in Park City, where a number of our higher-end athletes trained with skiers from all over the Western U.S. While our traditional June Lake training camp didn’t take place this summer, we hope that it will return in 2015. In the meantime in late July, 5 of our top U-16 athletes traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to train with the countries best. And finally, a group of juniors, college athletes, and an Elite Team member traveled to the Northern California Coast for some low-elevation, high-intensity training near Arcata, California. Our athletes are getting psyched for winter!
The 2014 edition of the Squaw Mountain Run results are online. Auburn Ski Club is the driving force (and main beneficiary) of this event, and over 400 runners and hikers participated this year in perfect weather conditions on a beautiful day. And of course, Far West Nordic was there in force.
Even though it’s a running race, it’s notable that so many of the top finishers are connected to the Nordic world. Men’s winner JP Donovan is currently the XC ski coach for Incline High School, while second place Andrew Cobourn is a former top junior Nordic racer for the division. 8 out of the top 12 men’s finishers have Far West Nordic ties, and 7 out of the top 12 women, including overall winner Anja Gruber (Far West Elite Team).
Congratulations to all the participants. Results are HERE.
