SuperTour Finals 2013 Host Tahoe Donner Enjoys Early Skiing

October CorduroyBy Mark Nadell- The Sierra Nevada is accustomed to long ski seasons. Point in fact, 2011 seemed like it would never end, with an XC ski race held on Fourth of July weekend at Auburn Ski Club on Donner Summit.

But early season October groomed skiing, while it does occur, is usually reserved for places like Fairbanks and West Yellowstone. Autumn, 2013, however, brought such a significant late-October storm sent skiers around the region scurrying through the dust of their garages to find their sliding gear. Just a couple of days after a weekend of shorts and t-shirts, over a foot of snow fell in the higher elevations of the Sierra.

The site of next Spring’s Super Tour Finals Competition, Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Area, began grooming earlier than at any time in its 27 year history. Not enough snow to send out the big machines, but the use of a new snowmobile-equipped roller and comb system put down almost 10 kilometers of grooming in the Home Range area of the resort.

And it’s still snowing, with even a bit more forecasted for the next couple of days and possibly more next week. While this doesn’t assure a smooth and continuous transition to winter, it certainly makes for some serious excitement (and fun) on the trails around Truckee and Lake Tahoe.  Other local XC ski resorts such as Auburn Ski Club and Royal Gorge also experienced significant early snowfall.

Tahoe Donner Cross Country will be one of the main hosts of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association 2013 SuperTour Finals and Distance National Championships, scheduled for April 2nd through April 11th, 2013.

Masters Jackets

masters jacketDear Masters Skiers

Tired of showing up at big races and nobody knows where you are from? OK, so it may not be your biggest problem but Far West Nordic can still help. We’ve designed a new Far West Nordic jacket with the help of the really great people at Mt. Borah designs. According to their website, “the pro xc jacket is designed for serious skiers looking for an extra edge in performance”. I’ll vouch for that but I also think they are also a great looking option for non-serious skiers who are just looking to stay warm on the trails. For detail on the jackets, go to http://mtborah.com/product/pro-xc-jacket/. Of note- these jackets are 100% hand crafted in the US of A!!! (which means we’re also one up on our Olympic team).

The only possible change in design may be some sponsorship logos on the sleeves with the proceeds going to Far West Nordic (to be determined and if your company may be interested, e-mail me)

Like they say on the TV, THIS IS A LIMITED TIME OPPORTUNITY!!!! I’m going to take orders for the jackets through Sunday Oct 28th. For sizing info, go to http://mtborah.com/customer-service/sizing-charts/

Jackets will cost $125 and will likely be ready by Jan 1, well in time for skiers going to Masters events. We will also have a signup at the Far West Auction but don’t wait until then!

If you have questions or want to order a jacket e-mail Andy Pasternak.

Thanks,

Andy

P.S. Many ancient cultures felt that buying Far West Jackets was good luck for ensuring snow. Can’t promise that but it is something to keep in mind.
