Far West Nordic senior and former Farm Team racer Kara LaPoint was 3rd woman, crushing the competition in her W25-29  age group. After a disappointing finish in the Ironman 70.3 Vineman Triathlon on July 15th due to a dropped chain, things came together for Kara in the full Vineman.

Far West coach Jeff Schloss also had a strong triathlon, finishing 8th in his M50-54 age group and 116 overall.

Congratulations Kara and Jeff!

Emerald Pools

On Wednesday members of the ASC Comp team and SBA team had an Emerald Pools adventure. After climbing into the traditional “Emerald Pool” for a few jumps, the crew headed upstream in wetsuits through the frigid waters of the South Yuba. The water flowing from the bottom of Lake Spaulding is chilling on even the warmest of days. After negotiating several long “must-swim” pools, and jumping off several opportune cliffs along the way, the group found its way back to the road with an improved appreciation for the beauty of this area.

Records show that this year’s Far West June Lake Camp was the 19th Annual! The first camp, held back in 1994, was actually held in a now closed campground at Horseshoe Lake in Mammoth, but for 18 straight years, Far West Nordic juniors have been gathering every July for some great training in the beautiful June Lake area. The camp has a colorful history of peak bagging high Sierra summits, roller skiing on the mostly deserted eastside roads, ski walking on the endless June Mountain summer road, rope swinging, swimming, and all kinds of camp shenanigans. The camp coaching staff has included just about every coach who has been involved with Far West for the last two decades, including a few campers-turned coaches. Coach Fiddler has not missed a camp yet in this run, including one pregnant summer and the following summer with Baby Laurel riding in a car seat while Nancy coached roller ski workouts out of her car. Emily Blackmer: A Collegiate Athlete in Residence

Emily BlackmerI am an Eastern girl at heart.  Well, a New Hampshire girl, if we’re going to be specific.  I was born and raised near the state’s capital and I’ve spent the past three years—and almost two year consecutively—at Dartmouth College in the small town of Hanover.  So when I decided that I wanted to focus on ski training this summer, I knew that I was due for a westward adventure.  It was time to see the country a little bit.  Dartmouth attracts its fair share of Westerners, and my Western friends heap high praise on their home states.  I’ve heard legends of endless sunshine, negligible humidity, rugged mountain ranges out the backdoor, and in the winter, extra blue wax every day and more snow than you know what to do with.
