We need volunteers for the Tahoe Rim Tour. Volunteers are needed for race day both on the Tahoe City and Northstar side. Far West Nordic depends on the time generously donated by our members to make our events happen. Please help us make the 5th annual Tahoe Rim Tour a huge success.

This special event interconnects some of the most scenic parts of Tahoe XC and Northstar’s trails. We’ll have on-going festivities at Northstar as racers come in. This is a fundraiser for the Far West Nordic Ski Education Association’s Junior Ski Programs.

If you are interested in volunteering please email race director Don Heapes.

Tracks of Passion

Tracks of Passion traces the story of Eastern Sierra skiing from its beginnings in the 1930s with early rope tows outside sleepy towns along Hwy 395 to the development of Mammoth Mountain. Dave McCoy’s vision for a family-fun ski resort expanded as his personally trained racers competed internationally and his children raced in the Olympics. With more than a half-century of McCoy’s leadership, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area eventually encompassed 27 lifts and a gondola, lodgings and amenities for skiers. An enthusiastic staff of dedicated mavericks ran ski lifts, ski patrol and ski school each winter, and built lifts each summer. Turning over the reins in 2005 at the age of 90, Dave McCoy summed up his career saying, “It wasn’t a job, it was a love affair.”

“Tracks of Passion is a highly personal account of the development and growth of skiing in Mammoth, and it joins the histories of Aspen, Sun Valley, etc. on the skiing bookshelf.”

Dianne Eagle, Mammoth Times, April 10, 2008

“Just wanted to tell you how wonderful Tracks of Passion is. You’ve captured the real gifts of skiing – what caused me in the dead flat midwest, to ski down into old quarries and off barntops and municipal trash heaps. Bravo!

Yours, P.J. O’Rourke”
